GRADE: Intermediate, 20 km/12.5 miles on various paths, including rocky sections. 400m total ascent, about 5 hours of hiking.
This circular 20km hike starts and finishes outside Tunbridge Wells station. Royal Tunbridge Wells is a large and affluent town within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the borders of Kent and East Sussex, 48km south-east of central London. The vibrant town is rich in cultural history and offers a great shopping experience. In the past a popular spa town, it was frequently visited by the royals, including Queen Victoria, and it is one of only 3 towns in the country awarded the prestigious title ‘Royal’.
The walk takes us along a section of Tunbridge Wells Circular Walk and the Spa Valley Railway. The Spa Valley Railway is currently closed due to Covid-19, but when in operation, you get to see steam and heritage diesel trains winding through the picturesque countryside and puffing white steam, like in the olden days.
The route also explores the Broadwater Warren Nature Reserve, and takes us past several impressive sandstone rock formations which make you feel as though you were hundreds of miles away from London.
