** Due to the heat, I have modified this hike to be 13.5 miles/21 km from Southease to Seaford **

We will start our journey at Southease Station, where a big hill climb and one of my favorite ridge walks on the downs awaits us. The high point of our hike is the prehistoric ruins near Firle Beacon, the high point at 217 meters. Commanding views of the downs and Sea await us (and probably a perfectly ripe blackberry or two if you are lucky). From here, we will descend to the market town of Alfriston, where we can seek some shade to have our lunch. From here, it’s an easy walk following the winding banks of the cuckmere river as it gradually widens to the sea. One more big climb over Seaford head brings us to the seaside town of Seaford, where we can take a much-deserved swim in the sea.

GRADE: Challenging. 13.5 miles/21 km with two big hill climbs. 5 hours walking time. On good paths but very exposed to the elements.

Meeting Point: Due to Covid, we can not travel together and organise cheaper group tickets at this time (however, you are welcome to self-organise if there is a lot of you leaving from the same place!). There are also a number of discounted tickets available if you book in advance via trainline.com. Meet me outside of Southease Station at 10:07. I’ll be dressed for hiking and wearing a day-glo yellow shirt.

There is a train that leaves Victoria at 8:54 (change at Lewes) that will get you to Southease in good time. If you choose to drive, your best bet might be to park in Lewes and get on the 10:00 train to Southease. The walk ends in Seaford. (A return ticket to Seaford will cover both ends to the journey).

Cost £10 organiser fee payable on RSVP. We have temporarily raised the price of walks to be able to accommodate smaller groups. As soon as it is safe to take larger groups, we will re-asses our pricing. For this hike, I will be taking a maximum of 16.

What to bring: PPE, Lunch, extra snacks and at least 2 litres of water, suitable clothing and hiking footwear. We will not be stopping at a shop or a pub along the way so have everything you need for the day!
