South Downs Winter Warmer and Arundel Christmas Market

I’ve added Christina as a second leader- we will split into two groups for this hike, so don’t let the crowd size put you off 🙂

A cracking hike in the South Downs is a fantastic way to spend your Sunday. Let’s get out there and hike some hills! Starting from the historic town of Amberley, we will hike up Rackham Hill, which at 195 meters, will be our high point of the day with views for miles around. After a lofty ridge walk, we will have a downland ramble to the River Arun, which we will meander alongside as it takes us to the city of Arundel. We will spend some time exploring: there is an impressive castle, catholic cathedral, and (as long as Covid doesn’t cancel Christmas again) a delightful Christmas market with lots of independent vendors and mulled wine. There are also some very characterful pubs in the area, which will make the day a nice mix of getting outdoors and enjoying a post-hike refreshment. This is a linear hike.

GRADE: Beginner/intermediate 11 miles/17 km with 235 meters ascent. 4.5 hours hiking time. Good paths, could be muddy in places. One big hill climb but the rest is gentle.

COST: £27 includes train travel payable upon RSVP. If you wish to make your own way there, the price is £10- just change the amount you pay when you check out on the paypal page.

MEETING TIME: 9:15 Victoria Station. I’ll be wearing a dayglow yellow shirt standing near Monsoon (near platform 11).

TRAINS: From London Victoria, we take the 9:35 that arrives Amberley at 11:10 (1 hr 35 travel time). If you wish to drive, there is a free car park at Amberley station- it’s on the same train line as Arundel so you can easily get back to your car at hikes end.

LUNCH: Pack lunch

WALK FINISHES: Approx 16.00 Arundel Station.
