River Wey Scenic Wander – 12 miles. Beginners Walk – FULL

Join us for a winter wander along the River Wey; a beautiful river walk which takes us past some stunning historic sites including poet John Donne’s summer house and Newark Priory.

Suitable to those new to hiking, or looking for a gentle walk.

We’ll take the train to West Byfleet where we’ll walk down to join the river as it wends towards Guilford. We’ll make our way skirting past the famous RHS Garden Wisley shortly and the beautiful old Elizabethan house which was poet John Donne’s Summer House.

We’ll continue on to (the wonderfully named) Send where we can stop for a drink and to eat our lunch then we’ll continue onwards along the river via some lovely locks and keepers cottages after which we’ll catch sight of the beautiful ancient Newark Priory.

Finally we’ll pass Dapdune Wharf National Trust owned Lock house now a museum dedicated to the river and the wharf, and make our way into Guildford where we can enjoy a drink by one of the riverside pubs.

MEETING TIME: under the Clock at Waterloo Station at 09.45– I will have a Meet Up Sign. We’ll take the 10:24 train to West Byfleet, arriving there at 10.52

COST: £8 on RSVP

Train tickets are your own responsibility and can be bought on the day ingroups of 3 or more in order to get the discounted rate of £11.15 (based on a group saver return) full rate (full rate £16.90). Please ensure you arrive at the meeting time to take advantage of this.

GRADE: Beginner- Easy, flat walk on riverside paths, possibly muddy.
Distance 14 miles approx. (5-6 hrs walking approx) Please wear hiking boots.
