GRADE: Beginner/Intermediate, 14 km/9 miles on good paths, 180m total ascent, about 3.5 hours of hiking.
This mostly flat linear hike starts at Coulsdon South station, and follows a section of the London LOOP. The London Outer Orbital Path, also called the M25 for walkers, is a 150-mile / 242km walk along public footpaths and through parks, woods and fields around the edge of Outer London.
After 4km, we reach Mayfield Lavender Farm – a heaven for bees and lavender and bee lovers, and a very popular spot for romantic photo shoots. We take a nice 1.5-hour break to indulge our senses, and have a nice picnic lunch. There is a small park next to the field where there are benches and toilets. There are also portable toilets at the farm. The farm shop sells a wide range of lavender products, including cosmetics (lovely soap), essential oils, lavender shortbread (really yummy), tea, jams, and many others.
ENTRY TO THE LAVENDER FARM: £4 per person; please bring money to get your entry ticket
After our extended lavender and lunch stop, we continue along the London LOOP, cutting through Banstead Downs, Banstead and East Ewell, until we get to Cheam and Nonsuch Park.
Nonsuch Park is a large park which was once a part of an extensive royal parkland, and a site of what might have been Henry VIII’s grandest building project, Nonsuch Palace. As its name suggests, it was believed there was no such palace elsewhere that would equal to it in magnificence. Today nothing remains of the magnificent structure which was commissioned by Henry VIII in 1538 to mark the birth of his son Edward and the thirtieth year of his reign, as it was completely dismantled by 1690.
From Nonsuch Park it is only a short walk to Ewell West station, where our walk ends.
