Join me as we tackle the North Downs Way- a 153 mile/246km waymarked National Trail that starts in Farnham in Surrey and ends at the White Cliffs of Dover. I’m going to break it down to manageable day hikes from London, linking the trail with train stations across the Southeast.
For this stage 6, we have a very long (but do-able) downland walk as we make our way to through Kent on the North Downs Way. Starting from Otford Station, we leave civilization behind and climb up onto the ridge of the North Downs. Most of this hike is along wooded footpaths and the trees should be starting to show their colours nicely at this time! We have a few climbs and long stretches on the ridge and some good views to the South. The hike ends in Cuxton, with views of Rochester and the River Medway.
GRADE: Intermediate/Challenging. 15.5 miles /25km on good paths. 573m elevation gain. It’s a long hike, so we will be taking this at a moderately fast pace to get in before dark.
MEETING POINT: Due to Covid, we can not travel together and organise group tickets at this time (however, you are welcome to self-organise if there is a lot of you leaving from the same place!). There are also a number of discounted tickets available if you book in advance via trainline.com. Meet me at Otford Station. If you take the train, it’s best to buy an Off-Peak Day Return to Maidstone (all stations). We end the hike at Cuxton station, which is on a different train line. A ticket to Maidstone will cover both ends of the journey.
If you choose to drive, it’s a little convoluted but you can get back to your car by rail from Cuxton. Change at Maidstone to get back to Otford.
COST: £10 organiser fee payable on RSVP. We have temporarily raised the price of walks to be able to accommodate smaller groups. As soon as it is safe to take larger groups, we will re-asses our pricing. For this hike, I will be taking a maximum of 20.
What to bring: Face covering and hand sanitizer, Lunch, snacks, water, suitable clothing and hiking footwear. We will not be stopping at a shop or a pub so have everything you need for the day!
