Weekday Walk: Horsley Jubilee Trail and the Lovelace Bridges

Join us for a circular autumnal hike through the woodland and downland of Surrey. From Horsley Station, we’ll hike through ancient woodland coppice and hangers. Following old footpaths and the recently-minted Jubilee trail, we will cross several of the historic “Lovelace bridges” in the woods- arched bridges scattered in the forest to help facilitate with logging operations in Victorian times. We’ll stop at a thousand year old church and also hear the grisly tale of Sir Walter Raleigh’s severed head and its connection to Horsley. A peaceful and restorative day our to cure all your urban woes.

GRADE: Beginner/Intermediate. 10 miles/16 km on footpaths that can be surprisingly waterlogged and muddy after the mere mention of rain, but otherwise nothing too challenging.

Meeting Point: Due to COVID, we can not travel together and organise group tickets at this time (however, you are welcome to self-organise if there is a lot of you leaving from the same place!). There are also a number of discounted tickets available if you book in advance via trainline.com. Meet me at Horsley Station at 10:18. There is a train that leaves Waterloo at 9:33 that will get you there in time. An off peak day return will be your best bet for a cheap ticket. If you drive you can park at or around Horsely station as this is a circular hike.

Cost: £10 organiser fee payable on RSVP. We have temporarily raised the price of walks to be able to accommodate smaller groups. As soon as it is safe to take larger groups, we will re-asses our pricing. For this hike, I will be taking a maximum of 15.
