Leith hill and the Greensand Way- a Long Hike in the Surrey Hills

Join us for a fantastic day out in the Surrey hills. The hike is a very long 15 miles (25km) and takes in some stunning views as we hike to the lofty 1000 foot heights of Leith Hill, the highest hill in all of Surrey.

From Gomshall station, we will hike south to the Greensand Way. With pleasant forested footpaths and autumnal breezes, we will traverse the peaks of Holmbury and Leith Hills, two magnificent giants of the Surrey hills. Holmbury has an impressive ruin of a large bronze-aged fort on her crown; Leith has a grand old folly of a tower- ‘a place for people to enjoy the glory of the English countryside’. From here, it is a long gradual decent to the old village of Dorking: once an outpost on the Roman Stane street, then a thriving market town mentioned in the Domesday book. Now, it has pubs and a rail station that will get you back to London.

GRADE: Intermediate/Advanced. 500 m of ascent- A long gentle climb, then undulating, then gently downhill after Leith Hill. However, at 15 miles/25km, this is quite a long walk, so be prepared to walk at a brisk pace to make it home before dark.

MEETING POINT: Due to Covid, we can not travel together and organise group tickets at this time (however, you are welcome to self-organise if there is a lot of you leaving from the same place!). There are also a number of discounted tickets available if you book in advance via trainline.com- buy a return to Gomshall and that will cover both ends of the hike. There is a train that leaves London Waterloo at 9:30 that gets to Gomshall at 10:47 (change at Guildford).

COST £10 organiser fee payable on RSVP. We have temporarily raised the price of walks to be able to accommodate smaller groups. As soon as it is safe to take larger groups, we will re-asses our pricing. For this hike, I will be taking a maximum of 18.
