GRADE: Intermediate/Advanced 20 km/12.5 miles on good paths, 470m total ascent with some steep hills, about 5 hours of hiking plus a picnic lunch.

This hilly and very scenic circular hike explores parts of the magnificent Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and stretches of the North Downs Way, a long-distance path that runs over nearly 250km from Farnham to Dover.

From Dorking station, we head into Denbies, the largest vineyard in England, which represents more than 10% of the vine plantings in the whole of the UK. We then join the North Downs Way and walk through a mixture of woodland and rare chalky meadows overlooking the vineyard and the peaceful and picturesque Mole Valley. We then turn north and cross Ranmore Common, following a path which takes us past Polesden Lacey, an Edwardian house and estate owned by the National Trust, and one of their most popular properties. The mansion is where “the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother spent the first part of their 1923 honeymoon”.

From there, we make our way back into Ranmore Common, and then into the lovely village of Westhumble. Finally, we visit Denbies again and then return to Dorking station.
