Weekday Walk- West Sussex Heathland and Temple of the Winds

Join us for a hike in a beautiful less-traveled corner of the South Downs in a landscape that inspired Tennyson. Sprawling purple heather heathland and rare habitats for not-oft-seen critters make for a breathtaking day out. We will keep our eye out for rare purple emperor butterflies, slow worms and lizards on the open downland. Beautiful views over the South Downs National Park will stretch all the way to the sea as we gaze out from our lofty heights of the Temple of the Winds viewpoint.

GRADE: Beginner/Intermediate. 10.5 miles/17km. There are hills! Nothing too strenuous, but the Black Down is one of the highest points in the Southeast at 280 meters. Quite a lot of the footpaths are overgrown this year, so getting nettled is a real danger. Wear trousers! 4.5 hrs total walking time.

Meeting Point: Due to Covid, we can not travel together and organise group tickets at this time (however, you are welcome to self-organise if there is a lot of you leaving from the same place!). There are also a number of discounted tickets available if you book in advance via trainline.com (off-peak day returns are the cheapest). Meet me outside of Haselmere Station at 11:16. I’ll be dressed for hiking and wearing a day-glo yellow shirt.

There is a train that leaves Waterloo at 10:15 that should get you there in good time.

This is a circular walk and there is a station car park if you choose to drive.

Cost £10 organiser fee payable on RSVP. We have temporarily raised the price of walks to be able to accommodate smaller groups. As soon as it is safe to take larger groups, we will re-asses our pricing. For this hike, I will be taking a maximum of 16.
